in 1998 I also cycled from Warsaw to Gomel in Belarusia. From there I went to the Russian border. I cycled to Kazakhstan, via Briansk, Voronezj, Saratov and Orenburg.
In Kazkhstan, at the small town of Tjuratam, which is forbidden for foreigners, and is close to Cosmodrome Bajkonur, I visited the cosmonaut museum. I was smuggled into the city by locals.
In the direction of the Chinese border, I first cycled in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. In the Fergana valley I visited an old silk factory. The intention was that I would cycle through Kyrgyzstan along the Torugart pass, to enter China, but this was not yet an official border crossing. Although i told the commander-in-chief of the Chinese border post, I wanted to help his family with some money, but I did not get in. I had to go back to Bishkek to fly. First to Urumtsji, and from there to Kashgar
The Sunday market in Kashgar was then still very exotic. Then the ride went into the mountains. Increasingly higher I came, on the first pass, not far from the K2, of about 4800 meters. I had to deal with heavy snow showers. But I was at the top, after a dangerous descent, the temperature raise again to 17 degrees.
The roads were very bad, a lot of gritty wash-board. Tashi dele I was greeted, I have experienced most Tibetans as friendly, laugh a lot, I drank tea with yak butter, tsampa, dried barley, this I did not like it much. The highest part where I cycled, according to my altimeter, was 5300 meters. At the end of the bike ride through tibet, there was a lot of rain and hail.
in Lhasa I visited the Jokhang temple
